MY STORY

MY STORY. MY JOURNEY. MY WHY.

Here’s the real story of how I got here.

MUSIC STARTED IT ALL

Ever since I was yay high, I had a passion for music—all types of music. By the time I was in middle school, I was already creating my own music and performing at school talent shows. I was also fascinated by mixing music, so I started creating my own mixtapes... using tapes. Yes, cassettes!

I would record songs from the radio and remix them myself. Eventually, some of my friends started asking me for copies, and they loved them! So they said. This went on all the way through high school, and the more I did it, the better I got at it.

THE FAMILY A/V GUY

All the while, I had this huge interest in technology too. Not computers—because they weren’t really as popular then—but I had a gift. For some reason, I was the family A/V guy.

I was installing and fixing stereo systems, TVs, and entertainment systems, most of which consisted of a receiver with a built-in radio tuner, cassette deck, record player (turntable), VCR, and eventually a CD player and DVD player. I was the best unpaid A/V support the family ever had.

COLLEGE CHANGED THE GAME

When I got into college, my love for music grew even wider. This is where I started really getting into music. I wasn’t just writing songs; I was now producing my own beats, recording, and even mixing my own songs.

Some crazy person at this college decided it was a good idea to put Digital Audio Production on the elective list. It became my favorite class, and the studio became my second home. Classroom projects became real-life musical projects and vice versa. Then I started getting my own equipment, piece by piece, until I had my own mini studio in my room... at school. That led to more music, more projects, more collaborations, and eventually live performances.

MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH COMPUTERS

My love affair with computers didn’t actually start until my freshman year in college. When I started, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted as a major, but I felt like my safest bet was something in business, so I went for General Management.

One day, I decided I needed my own computer, so I purchased one on eBay. Somehow, I managed to break it. I don’t even remember what I did. But I also decided I needed to fix it. That computer kicked my butt. It remained unfixed till this day! It sat in a corner for the longest time. But somehow, I grew this weird interest in learning about computers.

My advisor was already telling me General Management was too broad, so I decided to give Computer Science a try. I failed the first, most important class TWICE! I dropped that bad boy quick.

That’s when my advisor mentioned another route: “Why don’t you try Management Information Systems? It deals mostly with computers, and it’s still a part of the School of Management.” That was my calling! Although MIS wasn’t necessarily fully computer-focused at the time, it was close enough, and I was able to get the basics I needed. Much better for me than programming. I’m more of a hands-on type of human being.

ONE PERSON. A LOT OF HATS.

As I grew and became more independent, so did my love for music and technology. I was troubleshooting computers and other technology while creating music, deejaying, and even promoting and collaborating on multiple events.

At one point, I had my own radio show on a couple of local radio stations. I eventually built and managed my own internet radio station. I bounced around between everything I loved to do at different points in time. I never truly could figure out which one I loved most.

I’ve always been a jack of all trades and worn many hats. I’m never the best at any one thing, but I know a lot. Not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

AND THEN THERE WAS TOM.

It’s this mix of different passions that brought Touch One Media to be what it is today. Why should I have to choose between the things I love?

And so, TOM was born. A place where technology and multimedia meet and play together.
